Occasionally, in the field of scrip collecting, we are frustrated in our pursuits of certain scrip. I have collected Mingo County W.V. scrip for years and at times it has been quiet trying. One company which gave me a lot of agony was the Ragland Coal Company. (2335 A&B)

 

Supposedly, the company was located at Ragland, which is located on the Rockhouse fork of Pigeon Creek above Delbarton.  Their early scrip came from the Ingle System (A) and later (B) from ISC.

 

I have amassed a small library on the W.V. coal industry and have decided to do some research on Ragland.  There never was a Ragland Coal Company at Ragland, Mingo County, W.V.  It was located at Pemberton, Raleigh County, W.V. with general offices at Beckley.

 

I have arrived at this conclusion by consulting shipping records of the ISC company, W.V Department of Mines annual reports and the Keystone Coal Field Directory. All place the Ragland Coal Company at Pemberton, Raleigh County.  When the book is revised, the Edkins number will need to be changed: (2335 A&B) to 2199 D&E.
